The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter today announced that long-time volunteer Lorna Brown has been awarded the Clara Barton Honor Award for Meritorius Volunteer Leadership from the national headquarters of the American Red Cross. Brown, a resident of San Rafael, Calif., received the award in recognition of her 14 years of service supporting the disaster relief and readiness efforts of the Red Cross, especially within the Marin County community.
The Clara Barton Award, named after the founder of the American Red Cross, is the highest award a volunteer can receive within the organization. The award is given to individuals who have served in the leadership positions over many years, enabling the Red Cross to provide valuable service to the community.
Brown began her work as a Red Cross volunteer in 1995, focusing her work on providing assistance to families who have been affected by disasters, such as home fires, floods and hurricanes, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Over the years, she worked directly with affected families, helping them to find new homes and develop recovery plans following the devastation of a disaster. Brown also held key leadership positions within the Red Cross, responsible for training new volunteers and increasing the reach of the services the Red Cross is able to provide within Marin County.
